ELCA World Hunger Appeal Stands with Africa
Time magazine's cover story on AIDS in Africa highlights the epidemic that has claimed 15 million lives in sub-Saharan Africa, left 12 million children orphaned, and impeded the ability of African communities and nations to break the cycle of poverty and hunger. For many years, the ELCA has "walked with" the churches of Africa, which are helping those suffering from AIDS, caring for AIDS orphans, and helping prevent the further spread of AIDS. Gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal have enabled church-to-church support through the Division for Global Mission, action through our worldwide "family" (the Lutheran World Federation), and support of grass-roots community organizations that are partners of Lutheran World Relief (a common agency of the ELCA and LC-MS).
Members and congregations are invited to contribute to this special, "third-mile" effort by earmarking gifts "Stand with Africa" and sending them through their congregation or directly to: ELCA World Hunger Appeal, P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764. Make checks payable to the "ELCA World Hunger Appeal" with a note on the memo line "Stand with Africa."
