Christmas Memorials
and Honorariums
We have expanded the way in which you can honor or memorialize someone at Christmas. You may make a donation to a fund for poinsettias for the church, or, you may make a donation to the UniLu Music Fund. Donations may be in any amount. (we'll suggest $10 if you are able to afford it) We will no longer "sell" specific flower memorials. All money designated toward music will help defray the costs of instrumentalists and soloists over the course of the year. To be listed in the bulletins, donations (or pledges) must be received in the office no later than Tuesday, December 20.

This Sunday
The Fourth Sunday in Advent
God keeps the promise made to David, to give him an everlasting throne. The angel tells Mary that God will give David's throne to her son Jesus. She is perplexed by Gabriel's greeting and by the news of her coming pregnancy, but she is able still to say, "Count me in." We who know that Jesus is called king only as he is executed still find it a mystery hard to fathom, but with Mary today we hear the news of what God is up to and say, "Count us in."
Above: Annunciation (1252) S. Caffagio Mary- St. Servants of Mary, now Santissima Annunciata, Florence, Italy
"For Florence, torn by political and spiritual struggles, this subject had to be packed with special meanings. The angel had brought the Gospel to the Virgin of Nazareth, the proclamation of a new era. Humanity with the birth of Christ, marked a turning point in history and the Virgin Annunziata in Florence was as goodnews, as the synthesis, the symbol and the ideal of a renewed spirituality. Just remember Dante and his verses in the Divine Comedy (Purgatory, X, 34-35), to understand that the Florentines in the thirteenth century account of the Annunciation plucked from a spiritual program in sharp contrast with the harshness of the times: "Peace,''the Instead of wars that did not stop;"

Readings for Sunday
The Fourth Sunday in Advent
2 Samuel 7:1–11, 16 Instead of David building a house (temple) for the Lord, the Lord promises to establish David's house (dynasty) forever. Centuries later, after the Babylonian exile, no king sat on the throne. Even then, however, the people of Israel remembered this promise and continued to hope for a king, the messiah, the Lord's anointed.
Luke 1:46b–55 You, Lord, have lifted up the lowly. (Luke 1:52)
Romans 16:25–27 Paul closes his letter to the Romans by praising God because in the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ God has revealed the promised, divine plan of salvation for all humanity. Paul proclaims this gospel of Christ in order to bring about the obedience of faith among all nations.
Luke 1:26–38 In this annunciation, Luke makes clear that God comes with good news for ordinary people (Mary) from littleknown places (Nazareth). This king will not be born to royalty in a palace, but to common folk in a stall. Here Luke highlights the role of the Spirit, a special emphasis in his gospel.

SAY GOODBYE
TO OUR OLD STOVE
SAY HELLO
TO OUR NEW STAINLESS STEEL STOVE
The new five-burner Southbend stove was delivered Monday, and connected to the gas supply yesterday. St. Luke, Devon, was the church which had prepared the meal for Feast Incarnate that night, so they we able to be the first to use it. (Though all their food was prepared off-site, they just used the stove for serving) St. Luke helped with the purchase of the stove, which was also assisted by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Philadelphia Chapter. Two months ago, when the team from St. Luke was last here, Gary Bronson, Treasurer for the Philadelphia Chapter of Thrivent, presented a check for the purchase of the stove. Our congregation raised over two thousand dollars, and Thrivent matched those funds with another one thousand dollars.
Thank you to all who made this purchase possible!
